Until secondary school age, girls are able to play rugby alongside boys and therefore have an enormous choice of clubs to join if they wish to participate in this special sport.
However, from secondary school age, RFU rules prohibit girls playing in boys teams on safety grounds due to the different levels of development as girls and boys mature.
For those girls that wish to continue, many of the pathways which remain open to boys disappear for girls as there is not enough female participation to sustain teams at every club.
For South Bristol, the South Bristol Girls Rugby Club is the answer, with girls being able to join and continue their passion once there is no longer a place for them at their starter clubs.
A South Bristol Success Story
Starting with just 15 players and a dream, South Bristol Girls Rugby is now thriving with more than 80 players across Under-12s, Under-14s and Under-16s.
As they have grown though, so have their needs, and there are all manner of expenses that need to be met to give the girls a safe and fun environment in which to flourish.
Passionate about the power that sport has to transform, and for equality and fair play, UK Digital Marketing is delighted to have agreed to become the South Bristol Girls Rugby club’s main sponsor. Our support is going directly into funding key safety equipment like goal post and line flag padded protectors.
Promoting Positive Values
All children need avenues in which to grow, to find entertainment and stay healthy; and rugby should be a fantastically inclusive sport to offer this, with many different physical attributes and skills needed on the pitch at once. Girls need to have this option open to them.
The values of teamwork, self-respect, character building, strength, fitness, and pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone are all intrinsic to rugby. These are all values that will be instilled in generation after generation of girls in Bristol thanks to this club.
